It would not let me delete the huge, main, chunk of data. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Replies 6. The small partition you deleted was the Dell diagnostic partition.
It almost sounds like you weren't booted from the CD when you did the reinstall, and, judging from the error you're receiving now, the system is still trying to boot from the hard drive. Be certain you boot from the CD. You may need to temporarily change the boot order settings in the BIOS in order to do that. When i first started the reinstallation I didnt boot from the cd. I simply inserted the cd while xp was still running.
The disk doesnt want to boot from the cd though. I went in the bios and listed 'IDE cd-rom device' as the first device to boot from. Yet all I get is a black screen that says press f1 to try again or f2 to enter setup which is only the bios where I originally set the boot order.
Note that some specific versions may not work, in which case, just try another version. As Steltek said, the license info may be in the BIOS, in which case, it may not even ask for it on installation. Before you start, download this compliation of all or at least most of Windows XP SP 3 updates from Microsoft and all of the current drivers from Dell's driver download page for your machine , and copy them to separate folders Dell and MS on a flash drive.
Once you have the basic installation, copy the folders to the new installtion drive, and install them from there.
It's going to take long enough without having to install them one by one online. Jul 5, 70 13 The CD has a universal Dell volume key built in. I always put Pro on unless I was selling it and needed it to match the license exactly.

Also, an XP recovery disk from another Dell machine may try to install drivers for the other machine, which could give you error messages on installation, and it won't have all the drivers for your machine.
You can ignore the error messages, but, repeating my previous recommendation, download all the current drivers for your machine before you start. You may encounter less hassle if you can borrow a generic OEM installation disk. If it's the right vintage, the installation should work based on the BIOS license recognition.
If not, don't sweat using the key on the disk. You're not pirating the OS. You're just using other media to install the OS you already own as part of your machine. Mushkins Golden Member. That's also why I suggested that, if the installation with the older Dell disk failed, he could try a generic OEM version.
Aug 24, 1, 11 The product key that is on your system not the one on the side of your case you have is probably one of a handful that are in use on other Dell machines. The same is true for Windows OSes up to Windows 7. I installed the Windows XP home and the installation seemed to be okay but it is incomplete. I couldn't connect to the internet. When I try to boot up, I am told that "setupdd" is missing. I think I need a boot disc.
Get your drivers downloaded before you start. The OEM Windows setup Dell uses does not ask for a product key when being installed, but will prompt for a product key on Product Activation if it thinks your Windows is not installed on the appropraite machine, at which point you cannot use your Vista product key to activate your Windows XP unless that is you have a Vista Business license or above Vista Home Basic and Home Premium are not licensed to use Windows XP.
If the OS is the same, you should not have any problems. Community Member Since Post Reply. Top Contributor. Dell Support Resources. Latest Solutions. Can't find what you're looking for? You can post your question in our community.
